Health and Safety Policy for Gardeners Colindale
Gardeners Colindale is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, subcontractors, clients and members of the public who may be affected by our gardening and grounds maintenance activities. This Health and Safety policy sets out our approach to managing risk, preventing accidents and protecting the environment in which we work.
Policy Objectives
The main objectives of this policy are to prevent injury and ill health, comply with applicable health and safety legislation and industry best practice, and promote a culture of safety awareness across all gardening operations. We will regularly review and update this policy to reflect changes in legislation, work practices and lessons learned from any incidents.
Management Responsibilities
Senior management at Gardeners Colindale holds overall responsibility for the implementation of this Health and Safety policy. Management will provide appropriate resources, information and supervision to ensure safe working conditions on all gardening projects, from residential gardens to larger commercial grounds.
Managers and supervisors are responsible for planning work so that it can be carried out safely, ensuring that risk assessments are completed and understood, and confirming that staff are trained and competent to use any machinery, tools or substances required for the job.
Employee Responsibilities
All employees and subcontractors working for Gardeners Colindale share responsibility for maintaining safe working practices. Everyone must take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions.
Staff are required to follow all safety instructions, use protective equipment provided, report hazards or defects without delay, and cooperate fully with any health and safety procedures, investigations or training initiatives.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Before starting any gardening or landscaping task, appropriate risk assessments will be carried out to identify potential hazards and determine suitable control measures. This includes assessing risks associated with manual handling, use of machinery, access equipment, chemicals, traffic management and environmental conditions such as uneven ground or poor weather.
Safe systems of work will be developed and communicated to staff, covering how tasks are to be performed, what protective equipment must be used, and what precautions are necessary to protect the public and property. These systems will be reviewed when work changes or when new equipment and techniques are introduced.
Training, Supervision and Competence
Gardeners Colindale will provide appropriate health and safety training to all staff, including induction training for new starters and refresher training where required. Training may include safe use of lawnmowers and powered tools, working with hedge cutters and trimmers, safe lifting and carrying, use of chemical products and emergency procedures.
Only suitably trained and competent personnel will be permitted to operate machinery or carry out higher risk activities. Adequate supervision will be provided, particularly for new or inexperienced employees and when working on complex or large-scale gardening projects.
Use of Machinery, Tools and Equipment
All gardening machinery, tools and equipment used by Gardeners Colindale will be selected for suitability and maintained in safe working order. Regular inspections and servicing will be carried out according to manufacturer guidance and legal requirements.
Staff must conduct pre-use checks, report any defects immediately and remove damaged or faulty equipment from service until it has been repaired or replaced. Machinery guards must never be removed or bypassed, and tools must only be used for their intended purpose.
Personal Protective Equipment
Personal protective equipment will be provided where risks cannot be adequately controlled by other means. Depending on the task, this may include safety footwear, gloves, eye and hearing protection, high-visibility clothing, respiratory protection and weather-appropriate clothing.
Employees are required to wear the protective equipment provided and to take reasonable care of it. Any damage or loss must be reported so that replacements can be arranged promptly.
Control of Substances and Environmental Considerations
Where horticultural chemicals, fuels or other hazardous substances are used, Gardeners Colindale will assess the associated risks and follow the relevant safety data and control measures. Substances will be stored, handled, used and disposed of in a way that protects people, plants, wildlife and watercourses.
We will seek to minimise environmental impact by using less hazardous products where possible, avoiding unnecessary waste and working considerately in established gardens and communal green spaces.
Working On Clients Premises and Public Protection
When working at client properties or in shared outdoor areas, Gardeners Colindale will take reasonable steps to protect clients, visitors and members of the public. This may include using signage and barriers, cordoning off work zones, managing vehicle movements and scheduling higher risk tasks at quieter times.
We will respect client property, keep work areas as tidy as practicable and remove tools and materials that could pose a trip or impact hazard when not in active use.
Incident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, near misses and unsafe conditions must be reported as soon as possible. Gardeners Colindale will investigate incidents to understand causes and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
Emergency procedures, including first aid arrangements and actions in case of fire, fuel spillage or exposure to hazardous substances, will be communicated to staff. Suitable first aid equipment will be available, and at least one person on site will be trained in basic first aid where reasonably practicable.
Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement
Gardeners Colindale will monitor health and safety performance through inspections, incident reviews and staff feedback. This policy and associated procedures will be reviewed periodically and whenever significant changes occur in our work or in relevant legislation.
Our goal is to continually improve our health and safety standards, ensuring that gardening and grounds maintenance services are delivered efficiently, responsibly and with full regard for the wellbeing of everyone affected by our work.
